Background of the Study
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to the ethical obligation of businesses to contribute to the welfare of society beyond the pursuit of profits. Over recent years, CSR has become a central focus for businesses worldwide, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria, where businesses are expected to actively contribute to social and environmental sustainability (Ogunleye, 2023). Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, has a long-standing commitment to CSR through initiatives that include community development, educational support, health services, and environmental sustainability.
The banking sector in Nigeria has witnessed a growing emphasis on CSR, especially as businesses seek to align their operations with international standards of corporate governance and contribute positively to societal development. Zenith Bank’s CSR initiatives aim to foster goodwill, improve public relations, and attract socially conscious customers and investors. Kaduna State, a key economic and cultural hub in northern Nigeria, has been an important location for the bank's CSR activities. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that examine how these CSR activities impact the financial performance of banks like Zenith Bank in Kaduna State. This research aims to evaluate the relationship between CSR initiatives and the financial performance of Zenith Bank, with particular attention to profitability, market share, and brand reputation.
Statement of the Problem
While CSR has become integral to corporate strategy, its direct impact on financial performance remains a subject of debate. Despite significant CSR investments by Zenith Bank in Kaduna State, there is limited empirical research on how these initiatives influence the bank’s financial performance. Understanding the link between CSR and financial outcomes such as profitability and shareholder value is crucial for policymakers, bank managers, and investors. Therefore, this study seeks to fill the gap in knowledge by evaluating how Zenith Bank’s CSR initiatives influence its financial performance in Kaduna State.
